    Christine A. Stidley, PhD, a Biostatistician with over ten years of experience in medical and epidemiologic research, serves as Leader of the Biostatistics Core.  Her primary research interests are in renal disease, breast and lung cancer, and biostatistical methods in epidemiology. She is currently a co-investigator on two NIH funded projects with Dr. Philip Zager of Research Core I on research on renal disease, the Zuni Kidney Project and the Zuni Kidney Project: Family Studies. These studies are examining the epidemiology of kidney disease among the Zuni Indians, a population with excessively high rates of kidney disease.  The first study is assessing the extent of the epidemic of renal disease and examining potential risk factors, while the second study is assessing possible genetic factors involved in the disease. Dr. Stidley also collaborates with Drs. Steve Belinsky and Richard Crowell of Research Core 2 on lung diseases, through the NIH funded project, Markers for Lung Carcinogenesis in Bronchial Epithelium, and pilot projects. Dr. Stidley also has conducted research on the effects of measurement error in the assessment of the effects of radon exposure on lung cancer risk. She has experience conducting research using large patient databases, including renal disease using the patient database from Dialysis Clinic Inc. and cancer research using the patient database from Lovelace Health Systems, a health maintenance organization. This research in renal disease has been done in collaboration with Dr. Philip Zager of Research Core 1, while the cancer research has been done in conjunction with Drs. Floyd Frost and Kristine Tollestrup of Research Core 3. Dr. Stidley also is a member of Research Core 3.

    Dr. Bedrick is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, conducting research on biostatistical methods and collaborating in biomedical research.  He has developed statistical methods for use with logistic regression models, including matched case-control studies; methods for analyzing categorical data; methods for survival analysis, including mixed models; and Bayesian methods. Dr. Bedrick collaborates with Dr. Richard Crowell of Research Core 2 on risk factors for COPD. He also collaborates on research involving brain imaging techniques. Previous research includes the development of injury severity scoring in trauma. Dr. Bedrick also is director of the UNM Statistics Clinic. He also works with the Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center to enhance the statistical capabilities of the research conducted by the center, including genomic and other medical research.

    Dr. Mé
    nache is an Assistant Research Professor in the Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ménache has been working in the area of human health risk assessment with an emphasis on respiratory effects of inhaled air pollutants for over 20 years.  She has provided statistical collaborations for many human health and animal toxicology studies performed by or for the US EPA.  Her research has focused on various aspects of determining dosimetry.  She has developed empirical models to predict deposition of particulate matter in the lungs of laboratory animals and to estimate effects of complex mixtures based on data on the component compounds only.  She is currently working on an empirical model to predict exposure concentration and time since exposure based on biomarker levels.  Dr. Ménache is also interested in describing the architecture of the human lung mathematically for use in dosimetry models.  She is currently developing a geometry model of the entire lung for children.  In other projects, she is evaluating limited data from subjects with various diseases to begin development of geometry models for the compromised lung.  Such models are of critical importance to the US EPA which is mandated to protect health in sensitive populations and may prove to be of value therapeutically in determining appropriate strategies and dosing regimens for inhaled medicinal drugs. Dr. Menache is a member of Research Core 3.

    Dr. Myers is an Ecotoxicologist working on ecosystems and free-ranging nonhuman populations.  He uses general linear modeling approaches to investigate effects of environmental conditions like protein or contaminant content of diet on fertility, juvenile growth rate, mortality rate, and immune system function.  He has used nonlinear models to estimate parameters for toxicant dynamics models in rodents. Dr. Myers is collaborating with Dr. Johnnye Lewis of Research Core 3. They are developing databases and conducting spatial analyses of exposure factors, including the uranium concentration in environmental media and locations of unregulated water sources, which is being developed to foster collaboration with Native American communities in the Southwest. With Dr. Lewis he is also working on studies of the toxicity or inhaled manganese and inhaled depleted uranium. Dr. Myers is experienced in the use of GIS methods.
