It is widely believed that many non-infectious disease states such as asthma, diabetes, and especially cancers, are environmentally induced or triggered. The "Environmental Disease and Toxicology” Research Core integrates the research interests of its members to generate an interdisciplinary approach to investigate molecular mechanisms of  environmentally-induced diseases.  Environmental stimuli are broadly defined to include an array of physical and chemical challenges to human beings resulting in toxicity and responses which may adversely affect human health.

Core Goals:

The major goals of RC1 are to:

  • Foster expanded research collaborations between individual investigators in the Core and members of other Cores

  • Develop new interdisciplinary environmental health-related research projects and expand extramural funding by Core members

  • Develop new faculty and encourage their participation in environmental health-related research

  • Expand and develop new population-based and environmental-based research projects focusing on regional underserved populations

  • Expand the Toxicology Graduate Program at UNM

Research Interests & Organization:

Core member research focuses on how environmental agents modify or injure organ and tissue function, focusing on biochemical mechanisms of toxicity.

Investigators employ genomic and proteomic methodologies in many of their studies.

Because New Mexico encompasses a number of unique and underserved populations, the core is placing new emphasis on community environmental public health concerns.

This research core also collaborates with investigators examining lung injury and disease and has emerging interactions with epidemiologists and other public health scientists working with New Mexico’s unique populations.

Leadership:

Dr. Laurie Hudson is a Professor of Toxicology of the UNM College of Pharmacy who
co-leads this core in collaboration with Dr. Jim Liu, an Associate Professor of Toxicology also at the College of Pharmacy.  Contact Information for Dr.s Hudson and Liu is below:
