Count on the UNM Health System Burn Center to serve you and your loved ones with the best specialized care when you need it.
As the only burn center in the state, our staff, which includes board-certified physicians, provides expert care to patients with severe burn injuries as well as to those who undergo post-burn reconstructive surgery. Taking a team approach to patient care, we coordinate with trauma, critical care physicians and plastic surgery experts to help patients get back to their normal activities of daily life.
What We Treat
The UNM Health System Burn Center treats all types of burns, including thermal, chemical and electrical injuries. The burn center treats patients from all over New Mexico, as well as people from surrounding states such as southern Colorado, eastern Arizona and western Texas.
Our critical care burn team takes your wishes and needs into consideration as part of your treatment plan. In addition to working with a team of physicians, surgeons, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, burn techs, pharmacists and respiratory therapists, your team could also include the following medical staff:
- Nutritionists who are aware of and have training in meeting burn patients’ special dietary needs.
- Physical and occupational rehabilitation therapists.
- Social workers and case managers who can help navigate long-term care in a skilled nursing facility.
The 6-bed burn unit operates 24/7 and can accommodate more patients, as needed. In addition, our pediatric patients have access to treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit and the Carrie Tingley Rehabilitation Hospital.
