Big changes in healthcare are just around the corner, and UNM Hospitals is here to help you understand and prepare for them.
Under the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, you may be eligible for health insurance coverage through new plans that will soon be offered here in New Mexico. Coverage under these new plans will begin January 1, 2014, but you can apply for and enroll in the plans beginning this month.
The Medicaid program – now called Centennial Care in New Mexico – has been expanded to cover many people who weren’t previously eligible. And those who aren’t eligible for Medicaid/Centennial Care and who aren’t covered by other private insurance plans, may be eligible for health insurance coverage from the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange. This is a new marketplace offering consumers a variety of health plans from which to choose, and depending on your income, you may be eligible for federal subsidies to offset the cost of premiums.
If you are currently enrolled in the UNM Care program, you will need to apply for one of these plans before the end of the year.
If you’re not currently enrolled in the UNM Care program, you may still be eligible for health insurance coverage through either Centennial Care or the New Mexico health Insurance exchange. UNM Hospital’s patient financial services team is available to help you determine if you’re eligible for one of these plans, and if so, we can help you figure out which plan is right for you and can help you apply.
