Copyright Guidance: How Do I Manage My Copyright?
There are two ways to determine if the publisher of your article will allow you to post the final version of your manuscript to PMC.
- The site SHERPA/RoMEO collects and organizes information on publisher’s
copyright and archiving policies. It has a special section on Policy compliance and provides direct links to copyright policies.
Just follow these steps:
- Go to the site and search for your journal or publisher.
- Look in the “Mandated OA” section for a green checkmark located next to NIH.
- If there is a checkmark, look for links next to the “Copyright” line. The link will take you to the journal of
publisher site where you can learn the publisher stance on the Policy and if there are any conditions on compliance with the
Policy (e.g., time embargo, deposit instructions).
- Write the editor of the journal. He/she should be aware of the Policy and can offer you advice.
The second option may seem the easiest; however, learning to use the
SHERPA/RoMEO site will help you with choosing
future publication venues.
Do you have the publisher’s permission to deposit your article to PMC (and know what publisher restrictions you must follow)?
