The Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center (HSLIC) originated in 1947 as the library for the Bernalillo County Medical Society. In 1956, the library was moved from a local hospital to the Bernalillo County Indian Hospital, the precursor to today's UNM Hospital. Two years after the UNM School of Medicine received initial funding in 1961, the library moved into a former 7-Up bottling plant, now known as the HSC Med 2 Building, which houses one of HSLIC's electronic classrooms. In 1977, the library moved into its current home, constructed with a federal HEW grant of $2.24 million.
Today, as the 4th HSC academic component, HSLIC is the learning home for New Mexico's future health care providers as well as the information resource for current practitioners and citizens. Combining services seen together only in a few leading-edge programs nationally, HSLIC is the HSC's single service point for library resources, as well as information and educational technologies. It serves approximately 9,000 primary users including faculty, students, staff, and preceptors across the state. Emphasizing electronic resources and outreach, HSLIC offers online services 24/7.
