Distance Services provides training on health information resources in the form of classes and 30-minute demonstrations to health professionals and health-related organizations serving the general public. Training assists participants in finding, evaluating, and using relevant health information, and can be customized to meet the needs of the participants. Sessions may be held at HSLIC, at other locations with the state, or via Internet-based technologies, where applicable, and may be customized for a particular group. Example trainings include:
The Distance Services Coordinator at HSLIC coordinates the scheduling of NLM classes to be held at HSLIC or at other sites within New Mexico. These classes provide Continuing Education (CE) credit for health and medical librarians, Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits for physicians, and Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) for nurses.
The Houston Academy of Medicine - Texas Medical Center Library hosts NLM classes targeted for health and medical librarians.
The National Training Center and Clearinghouse (NTCC) also sponsors NLM classes across the country each year.
Each Spring and Fall, the Medical Library Association (MLA) Distance Education program hosts Webcasts on topics of interest to health and medical librarians for continuing education credit. HSLIC plans to be a site host for upcoming Webcasts in November 2008 and February/March 2009. There is no cost for attending these training sessions. Check back at this Web site for more details or call the Distance Services Coordinator at 505-272-0757.
Distance Services attends conferences, health fairs, and community events as an exhibitor to present a wide range of health information resources, including numerous online databases which are all freely available to the public. Frequently the exhibit includes live Internet demonstrations.
