Borrowing Privileges & Circulation Policies

Borrowing Privileges

UNM HSC faculty, emeritus faculty, staff, and students and Main Campus faculty, staff and students are eligible for borrowing privileges. Members of the Outreach Program and HSC preceptors and HSC volunteer clinical faculty also have borrowing privileges.

Licensed health professionals and corporations in New Mexico or the Navajo Nation may obtain borrowing privileges for a modest fee. Inquire at the Library Information Desk or call 505-272-2311.

Alumni Borrowing

UNM alumni who have made a donation of $35.00 to the Friends of the Library fund, may request a three month borrowers card, or apply the amount donated towards the purchase of an annual Library borrower's card (if appropriate). Proof of donation may be requested at time of application.


Library Passport

Alliance for Innovation in Science & Technology Information Passport Program

The Library participates in the Alliance for Innovation in Science & Technology Information Passport Program. A list of participating institutions may be found on the AISTI web site. As part of this program Faculty, Staff, and Graduate students from these institutions may borrow  from the participating libraries. They must go to their institution's (home) library to fill out a Passport application. They then bring this Passport and their Institutional ID card to the Health Sciences Library.

New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries Passport Program

The Health Sciences Library participates in the New Mexico Consortium of Academic Libraries (NMCAL) Passport Program. A list of participating institutions may be found on the NMCAL web site. As part of this program Faculty, Staff, and Graduate students from these institutions may borrow from the participating libraries. They must go to their institution's home library to fill out a Passport application. They then bring this Passport and their Institutional ID card to the Health Sciences Library.

 
Circulation Policies

Standard Loan Policy

A valid Library card / Lobo Card / HSC Identification must be presented to check out materials. Ten items may be checked out at any one time. Materials may be subject to recall after the initial loan period if requested by another borrower or at any time if needed for class reserve. Borrowers with overdue materials will have library privileges suspended until the items are returned. Appropriate replacement and processing costs will be assessed if borrowers fail to respond to overdue notices.

Books

Books from the open stack collection circulate for two weeks. Three renewals are permitted even if materials are overdue. Items which have been requested by another user may not be renewed. A renewal may be requested in person or by calling 272-2311 or via the online catalog.

Journals

Journals published within the past three years must be used in the Library. Three years after the publishing date, they may be borrowed for 24 hours, no renewals. Some journals, which are more "book like" in format, circulate for two weeks. This is clearly marked on the inside cover.

Archival materials

Archival materials may be requested in the New Mexico Health Historical Collection Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 5:00, or by appointment on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 10:00 - 5:00. The location "Archives-Rm 223" or "NM/SW" indicates that the book is for use only in the New Mexico Health Historical Collection room.

Audiovisual and Electronic materials

Audiovisual and electronic materials may be checked out for varying amounts of time, based on format and use. Consult Information Desk staff for details.

New Books

New books are displayed on the 2nd floor for one week. New books may be checked out by eligible borrowers.

Reference and Course Reserve Materials

These materials circulate for 3 hours with no renewals. Items may be checked out overnight 3 hours before closing and returned 1 hour after opening the following day.


Patron Privacy Policies

Privacy of patron records is governed by two HSLIC policies: "Retention and Destruction of Library Records Containing Patron Information" and "Release of Private Patron Information."
