Microsoft Campus Agreement

Products Available Under the Microsoft Campus Agreement

Essentials

The Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA) provides campus-wide licensing for a limited number of Microsoft products.  Work at home purchases are not supported by the HSC.

The products currently covered under the MSCA are:

  • Office Suite
  • Windows Desktop OS Upgrade
  • Core Client Access License (CAL)

Most products are available at the current retail version only.

Faculty and staff who are eligible under the MSCA can purchase the Office Suite and Windows Vista at the bookstore for $9.95 each.

Microsoft Desktop Operating System Upgrades

  • Microsoft Windows Vista Upgrade

Microsoft Campus Agreement (MSCA) operating system licenses for the desktop are upgrade licenses and require that you have an existing fully-licensed version of a Microsoft Windows desktop operating system licensed for your machine. Full Windows desktop licenses cannot be purchased through any Microsoft volume licensing agreement. They can only be purchased as a Fully Packaged Product (FPP) through a retail outlet OR installed on a new computer through an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) such as Dell, HP, Sony, etc.

Server operating systems are not covered under the MSCA, but can be obtained by departments under the ITS Microsoft Academic Select Agreement from UNM Software Distribution.

Although the Campus Agreement does provide full downgrade licensing (previous versions of Windows), Faculty and Staff Work-at-Home users can only purchase the latest version of Windows Operating Systems through their campus distribution point. Departments can purchase media for previous versions through ITS Microsoft Academic Select from UNM Software Distribution.

Microsoft Core Client Access Licenses (CALs)

Client Access Licenses (CALs) are for use in conjunction with Microsoft server products, and are thus applicable to departmental purchases only.

The Microsoft Core CAL consists of:

  • Windows Server CAL
  • Exchange Server CAL
  • Systems Management Server CAL
  • SharePoint™ Portal Server CAL

Other Microsoft Products

Any Microsoft products not mentioned above are not covered under the Microsoft Campus Agreement. Notably, Windows Server editions are not covered under this program.

Faculty and staff work-at-home users can obtain retail and educational licensing of boxed products through other retailers.

Departments that would like to obtain licensing for other products (e.g. Windows Server 2003, SQL Server, Visio, Project, etc.) can do so under the ITS Microsoft Academic Select Agreement from UNM Software Distribution at greatly discounted rates.
