3RD GRADE
CURRICULUM
Read Me File for the Pathways
Third Grade Curriculum
The Third Grade Teachers Guide is provided herein as it was taught
during the full scale study of Pathways. You are invited to download this
teachers guide containing all lessons, student materials, posters,
family packs etc. necessary to teach this curriculum. Please note in doing
so that there are items that will need duplication for student use, enlargement
in the case of the posters, and reorganization of envelopes for the Family
Packs.
It is important again to emphasize that lessons are to be taught in sequence
in order for students to build skills. Weeks One through Six may be taught
sequentially in a separate block as was done during the Fall in the study.
Weeks Seven through Twelve need to also be taught sequentially after the
first six weeks as done in the Spring of the study. This time frame allowed
teachers to effectively manage their daily schedules and provided reinforcement
for student learning.

A Procedures Manual was developed
for use in training teachers using a Train the Trainers model. The process
to set an agenda for training and the scripting of lessons are contained
within this manual. In addition, there is a detailed listing of the materials
needed in putting together a Teacher Box for teaching the Third Grade
Curriculum.

Description of the Pathways
Third Grade Curriculum:
Amanda and Daryl Whitehorse live in a Native American community and begin
a journey that takes them to other Native American nations. On this journey,
they are accompanied by grandparents, the guardians of cultural knowledge,
who encourage the development of positive health habits. Traveling among
Native Americans, Amanda and Daryl hear stories that transmit cultural
information and begin to develop an appreciation of a healthy lifestyle.
Choices are emphasized as healthful eating is promoted in lessons that
teach about "Everyday Foods" which are good to eat almost anytime.
Students taste test new foods through snack preparations with fruits and
vegetables that are linked to goal setting activities. The learning of
food groups, taste testing, and measuring fat and sugar are new skills
in activities that are fun and memorable for students.
In the third grade, Everyday Physical Activities recognized and encouraged
daily physical activity. Learning about body cues and setting goals for
physical activity sets the pace throughout the lessons. The Pathways Nations
Physical Activities chart reinforces the lifestyle of living in a Native
American community. This approach promotes the building of positive attitudes
towards exercise and develops motor skills. Free play recess for 20 minutes
and daily 3-5 minute classroom exercise breaks are designed to increase
physical activity. These activities encourage a creative and fun time
for both teachers and students. Additionally, the Physical Education classes
at the school reinforce physical activity through scheduled classes.
An activity book, My Pathways Journey, contains twenty-two (22) pages
of assignments to assist students in learning the objectives of the various
lessons.
