NEPHROLOGY PHARMACOTHERAPY FELLOWSHIP

 

The fellowship in Nephrology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is a two-year program designed to develop clinical and translational research skills and to provide the fellow with clinical and teaching experience in various areas of nephrology. The program allows the individual to gain experience within an active clinical and translational research program in the area of oxidative stress in chronic kidney disease. The program offers hands-on laboratory experience including peripheral blood monocyte isolation, ELISA, flow cytometry and cell culture. The fellowship will also provide a directed, highly individualized program designed to provide training in all aspects of clinical research in human subjects including protocol development, grantsmanship, institutional review board submission, informed consent and subject enrollment. The fellow will also become proficient in statistical analysis through hands-on and optional didactic training. The development, conduct and completion of an independent research project will be required for completion of the fellowship. The fellow will be involved with didactic and clinical training of Pharm.D. students.

 

Primary fellowship activities will take place in at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center and the affiliated Dialysis Clinic Inc. outpatient hemodialysis unit. There are also opportunities to participate in rotations at rural Native American pueblos. Chronic kidney disease is considered a health epidemic and it is recognized that that there is an emphasis on research in this area. The population in New Mexico offers a unique experience to provide pharmaceutical care to a culturally diverse population.
