Experiential education at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy is an integral component of the professional degree (Pharm.D.) curriculum. Comprising over twenty-five percent of the overall education, Pharmacy Practice Experiences, or PPEs, are designed to give students the opportunity to apply classroom learning to real-life situations. Students work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists (preceptors) to learn key aspects of the profession, including dispensing, patient counseling, disease state management, professionalism, and overall quality drug therapy. Students participate in Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) following their first and second years of the professional program, with experiences in community pharmacy and institutional pharmacy, respectively. Students participate in Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs) throughout the entire fourth year of the curriculum. These experiences provide valuable training and professional development to student pharmacists. The UNM College of Pharmacy Office of Experiential Programs coordinates all aspects of PPE scheduling.
