To apply for financial assistance, students complete the 2009-2010 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov

The application is processed by the US Department of Education and results forwarded to UNM. Financial aid is available in three forms: Federal/State Grants, Federal/State Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, and Federal/State Work Study.

  • Students can check on their financial aid status by accessing LoboWeb via MyUNM.

  • Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree are only eligible for Federal/State loans and work study.

  • Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA to continue receiving financial assistance.

  • Students are required to pass 67% of the courses they register for each academic year to maintain financial aid eligibility.

  • The Department of Education has limited the number of credits financial aid will cover before a degree is earned.

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) students are classified as professional/graduate students (by the Department of Education) and are charged a $25.00 per semester graduate student fee.

  • For the first year of the Pharm.D. professional program, students are eligible to apply for federal loans at the undergraduate level of borrowing, and federal grants if they are eligible. For the final three years of the program, students become eligible to borrow at the graduate student level, but are not eligible for federal grants.

STUDENT LOANS

College of Pharmacy Emergency Short-term Loan Fund
The College maintains an emergency loan fund for pharmacy students. The New Mexico Pharmaceutical Association supports this fund.  Students with unanticipated expenses may apply for a UNM Short-term Loan.  These loans are available at an interest rate of 1% per month.  Applications are available from the COP Office of Student Services.  Disbursements are made at the Cashier's in the UNM Student Services Center.

The Short-term Loan fund is governed by the following criteria:

All applicants must be enrolled at least half-time for the current semester.

Loan funds are not available between semesters.

Applicants with an outstanding short-term loan are not eligible for another short-term loan.

University employees enrolled in UNM courses are not eligible for this loan fund.

Applicants must meet standards of satisfactory academic progress.

The loan due date is the last day of the current semester.  In no case will the date exceed 90 days or the last business day of the current semester.  Financial aid to be dispersed in the subsequent semester is not considered a source of repayment.

Applicants who have delinquent short-term loans will have a hold placed on their academic transcripts, and may not be allowed to register for the subsequent semester.  Short-term loans will be turned over for collection when 90 days past the due date.

If the short-term loan is approved, the applicant will sign a promissory note.

All outstanding UNM balances (including short-term loans, regardless of due dates) will be paid with the first source of financial aid received (e.g. Direct Loans,. grants, scholarships) within the same semester.

Short-term loans are limited to $2,000.

Applications are available in Nursing and Pharmacy Building, Room 179A, or call 505-272-3241, e-mail dperea@salud.unm.edu
