The Specialized Residency in Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy at the UNM/HSC will be tailored to give residents exposure to all aspects of the management of patients with infectious diseases. Experience will be achieved through clinical rotations specifically designed to enhance the pharmacist’s role in infectious disease pharmacotherapy. The resident will spend time learning how to develop, implement, and manage an effective Antibiotic Management Service. Clinical experience will be gained through clinical rotations on the Infectious Diseases Consult Services (adult and pediatric services), Oncology Services, Internal Medicine, through services in the STD clinic,… Time spent in the infectious diseases ambulatory care clinic is continuous, one-half day per week, throughout the year. The resident will be responsible for adherence with HAART regimen in patients infected with HIV. The continuous involvement in the clinic throughout the year is an excellent opportunity for the resident to develop meaningful relationships with patients and other health care providers. Furthermore, the resident will be involved in collecting outcome data in order to improve patient care and provide cost savings to the pharmacy department.
