The Integrated Environmental Health Middle School Project (IEHMSP) is housed on the UNM campus in the College of Pharmacy. The seven year grant (2000-2007) is a collaboration between K-12 outreach experts and research faculty at the University of New Mexico's NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Center and the University of Washington's NIEHS Center for Ecogenetics and Environmental Health. The seven-year goal of this project is to train educators in grades 6 through 8 to use newly developed curricular materials developed specially for New Mexico students. These new learning exercises employ the strategy of utilizing Environmental Health Sciences as an Integrating Context (EHSIC) for student-centered problem-based learning. IEHMSP facilitates collaboration between community stakeholders and classrooms. Through these classroom collaborations students learn first-hand that environmental health science (EHS) topics are relevant to a wide range of community groups, individuals, and decision makers. Therefore, the goal of Middle School Project (IEHMSP) is to train New Mexico educators (teaching in grades 6-8) to plan and implement curricula and research projects that use environmental health science as an integrating context for learning.
