Southern California native Evan Christopher began playing the clarinet when he was eleven. His interest in jazz was rewarded with the Louis Armstrong National Jazz Award and a scholarship to complete his high school studies at the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts. In 1994, he moved to New Orleans, where his work in a panoply of styles included gigs with Al Hirt and veterans of Preservation Hall.
He moved to San Antonio in 1996 for a three year stint with the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, which included several performances on their public radio program "Riverwalk: Live from the Landing." In 2001, Christopher returned to New Orleans, where he focused on the Creole clarinet style and began work on a MA at Tulane University.
After Hurricane Katrina, he lost everything and began traveling for work. In 2006, he came to Albuquerque, where he gave one of his first concerts after the storm. The next day, the Healthy Voices production team recorded him for a series of public service announcements http://hsc.unm.edu/pharmacy/healthyvoices/PSAs.html#Hurricanes_KaRita warning flood victims about health and safety issues.
