The Heath Careers Academy (HCA) is an intense and rewarding six-week non-residential program held at the University of New Mexico (UNM) Health Sciences Center (HSC) for current high school freshman, sophomores, and juniors. HCA is designed to help strengthen ACT scores. The program is designed to enhance math, science, language and critical thinking skills. It also aims to stimulate interest in the health professions, especially among underserved and underrepresented populations in New Mexico, and to increase awareness of the urgent need for healthcare workers in our state. HCA will challenge students by balancing a rigorous academic curriculum with service learning, cultural competency, and health career exploration.

The HCA program begins on June 17th and ends on July 26th, 2013. Mandatory orientation has been scheduled for June 15th.

What does HCA offer?

  • Over 100 hours of math, science, and language instruction
  • 20 hours of ACT preparation and practice exams
  • CPR training
  • Individual tutoring to support instruction
  • Presentations from UNM Health Sciences Center and community health professionals
  • Service Learning
  • Tours of the health care teaching facilities at UNM Health Sciences Center
  • Cultural competency training
  • Daily stipends

Student Expectations

  • Commit to the full six-week program plus one-day orientation and approach the experience with dedication to learning
  • Participants may not bring their own vehicles and are expected to secure daily transportation to UNM HSC
  • Comply with campus policies regarding conduct, academic honesty, and lawful behavior
  • Upon acceptance into HCA, participants must to submit immunization records with current TB test
  • HCA was designed to meet the needs of New Mexico by educating and inspiring our youth to become health care professionals in our state. In order to meet this goal, the Office of Diversity asks that all program participants remain in contact with our office beyond the summer program
  • This is a non-residential program, all students are encouraged to apply, however students from outside Albuquerque must secure housing

 Student Eligibility 

  • New Mexico resident
  • Demonstrate interest in pursuing a health career
  • Minimum GPA of 2.25 on a 4.0 scale
  • Parent permission
  • Proof of health insurance or Medicaid
  • Must be a current freshman, sophomore or junior in high school, current seniors are encouraged to apply to UHSEP
