Seminar by UNM CTSC and the New Mexico Society of Student Physician Scientists

The UNM CTSC and the New Mexico Society of Student Physician Scientists is happy to announce that Brad Webster will present a paper at the Translational Research Journal Club entitled "Heme oxygenase-1 deficiency accelerates formation of arterial thrombosis through oxidative damage to the endothelium, which is rescued by inhaled carbon monoxide." CTSC MSCR Program Now Accepting Applications for 2009-2010!

In accordance with the new directions that NIH is taking in funding research and in support of the recent submission of a $48 million proposal to NIH to fund the UNM HSC Clinical and Translational Science Center, an exciting new masters program was developed to further training of faculty interested in pursuing a career in clinical and translational research.This program – a Masters of Science in Biomedical Research with a Concentration in Clinical Research (MSCR) – has just completed a very successful semester with its second cohort of students: Laeben Lester, MD, Stephen Lu, MD and Carlos MaciasArgote, MD.

Applications are now being accepted for the 3rd cohort of students, with orientation and course work starting June 24, 2009. Deadline to apply is March 1, 2009. For more information, visit the MSCR Website.

The Clinical & Translational Science Center (CTSC) Announces the Second Round of Pilot Project Awards

The CTSC is pleased to announce the winners of the second round of $30-50,000 Pilot Project applications. Through a highly competitive process and from a pool of 20 applicants, the following four distinguished projects were chosen by a multi-disciplinary review committee:

  • Drs. Florian Birkmayer & Andrew Sussman, "Screening and Treatment of Alcohol and Opiate Dependence in Primary Care (STOAP)"
  • Dr. Dina Hill, "Auditory and Somatosensory Integration in Young Children With Autism: In Search of an Early Marker"
  • Drs. Ke Jian "Jim" Liu & Howard Yonas, "Translating the Neuroprotective Hyperoxia Treatment From Animal Model to Stroke Patients"
  • In partnership with the Institute of Public Health (IPH): Drs. Glen Murata & Bruce Horowitz, “Missed Opportunities for LDL Treatment in Primary Care – A Multilevel Model”

Each winner will receive requested funding from the CTSC to complete their projects within a two-year timeframe. The hope of the CTSC is that this will further each investigators' translational research skills and better their chances of receiving higher-level funding from NIH in clinical & translational research.

Scholar's paper selected for review by the Annals Journal Club
