Biomedical Informatics

Biomedical Informatics (BMI) is key to the CTSC’s goal of creating coordinated infrastructure that encourages innovative clinical and translational research. BMI initiatives are already progressing rapidly, as shown by the achievements below.

Data Warehouse

An integrated, regional clinical data warehouse and federated system to capture, archive, and administer clinical, laboratory, and outcome data.

  • Services to investigators launching as of July 1, 2009!
  • Visit the Data Warehouse pages for detailed information!

Easy Access and Web Portal

Unify the research community through single point-of-contact access using a web portal

  • Hired and trained staff to serve as Research Concierge
  • Executed a Memorandum of Understanding with Arizona State University (ASU) for joint development of web portal software tailored to researcher needs

Informatics Tools and Services

Enhance BMI Core support through consultative services and development of re-usable, rapidly-configurable tools

  • Purchased state-of-the-art servers and storage to host BMI tools
  • Negotiated secured hosting, server maintenance, and backup services with the HSC Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center
  • Expanded use of REDcap (Research Electronic Data Capture)

Expanded Educational Initiatives

Expand training of investigators, students, and staff in BMI and form new partnerships to leverage BMI and IT activity region-wide.

  • Certificate program in BMI under development with ASU
  • Posted two new faculty positions in BMI through the Departments of Medicine and Pathology
