Admission Process

 

Application Deadline for Academic Year 2008-2009: February 29, 2008

Step 1. Submit a UNM Graduate Program application to the UNM Admissions Office.

Where:Online (link here) or in person at the UNM Admissions Office (UNM Student Services Center, Room 140, phone number 505-277-2446).

Note: Please check the box on the application that indicates that you are applying to the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program; next to “Concentration,” write in Clinical Research. Send an official copy of all transcripts to the Admissions Office. The fee for applying to a UNM Graduate Program is $50.

Step 2. Request an application packet for the MS-BIOMED-CR program. This packet includes all paperwork to be submitted with your application.

Where: The Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC) – located in the UNM HSC Basic Medical Sciences Bldg. (BMSB), Room B-83, phone number 505-272-6556

Note: A separate set of official transcripts must be submitted to the CTSC office – address: UNM HSC CTSC, Attn.: Bambi Jackson, MSC08 4560, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131.

 

Admission Requirements


Applicant

  1. 1. Letter/Personal Statement (3-5 pages) - must address:

    • Research and career trajectory
    • Prior research activities
    • Why this program is an important component of your training
    • How competencies will prepare you to undertake the research you want to do
    • Career timeline after program completion
    • Tenure and promotion plans and implications of enrollment in MS-BIOMED-CR

  2. CV

  3. All applicants must have attained a terminal degree (i.e., PhD, MD, PharmD). Have an official copy of all transcripts sent to UNM Admissions, as well as to the CTSC office. (Note: GRE, MCAT, PCAT, TOEFL, etc., not required).

  4. Attendance at a MS-CR Seminar on either 1/31/2008 or 2/28/2008


Research Thesis Advisor

  1. Letter of Commitment with very specific mentoring plan, including:

    • Goals and objectives of advising relationship
    • Expectations for frequency of contact and type of contact
    • Advisor roles and expectations
    • Student roles and expectations
    • Feedback mechanism(s)
    • Turnaround time for feedback
    • Agreement to participate in MS-CR Orientation (2 hours), mentor training and evaluation, biannual portfolio review and Independent Committee on Studies (thesis committee).

  1. Letter of support describing:

    • Career trajectory
    • Commitment to faculty position
    • Release time
    • Other support (e.g. research funds, book/supply fees, travel to scientific meetings, etc.)
    • Tuition support (if resident or fellow)
