Program Requirements

There are 12 domains of study in the MS-BIOMED-CR.  These include: Research Design, Measurement, Study Implementation and Project Management, Biostatistics, Current and Emerging Technologies, Patient Outcomes Research, Epidemiology, Conducting Research within Health Care Systems, Biomedical Informatics, Cultural Competence, Grantsmanship, and Ethics and Regulatory Compliance.  Learners are required to complete a minimum of 1 credit in each of the 12 areas and participate in a monthly seminar (equating 1 credit per year, enrolling each Spring; 2 credits required).  The core requirements (14 credits) for the MS-BIOMED-CR will be substituted for the core requirements of the MS in Biomedical Sciences (see attached memo from Angela Wandinger-Ness, Assistant Dean for Graduate Studies).

Once the learner has completed the core curriculum, he/she will be required to attain additional competency within several of the 12 domains.  No single domain may accrue more than a total of six credit hours (one required hour and five elective hours).  It is suggested that each participant plan his/her program of studies to complete a total of two credits in not less than three domains and a total of three credits in at least two domains.  With an approved petition, a participant may take or transfer other course work outside of the MS-BIOMED-CR program for up to 6 credit hours.  In total, learners will choose 18 elective credits from the twelve domains (or approved alternative).

A thesis is required.  Many of the higher level competencies will be attained through practical experience conducting research.  The thesis requirement is 6 credit hours.
