In the past, knowledge and evidence about clinical problems seen in primary care practice did not come from primary care settings. Historically, health research took place in large, urban academic medical centers. Though valuable, the results of research did not adequately addressed the health problems of millions who live in rural, underserved, low-income areas of the country.
In recent decades Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRNs) have developed to study the processes and diseases seen in primary care. PBRNs are made up of primary care providers who come together, with support from researchers, to collectively conduct research on topics of concern in their practice.
Founded in 2000, RIOS Net is an innovative PBRN designed specifically to conduct research that has direct relevance to the Southwest’s diverse and medically underserved populations. RIOS Net features a firm commitment to actively engage the communities served on how to best to study and improve primary care.
Our membership is composed of over 250 doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in New Mexico who practice in over 60 primary care locations in Community Health Centers, Indian Health Service and Tribal facilities, and University of New Mexico academic settings.
