FACULTY POSITION

THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW MEXICO SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Metabolic Biochemistry
Assistant Professor, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Position Description: The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. Research areas of primary interest are expected to focus on identifying fundamental properties of human metabolic and endocrine disorders. Those applicants with a principle interest in pathologies of metabolic syndrome and related disorders are highly desirable. Candidates must be strongly committed to an academic career in biomedical research and teaching, The primary responsibilities for this position include:

  1. Develop an independent, extramurally funded research program centered on metabolic aspects of human disease.
  2. Participate in the Department's teaching activities (Medical, Graduate, and Undergraduate levels) and contribute to the development of new curricula.
  3. Participate in departmental and institutional committees

Minimum Requirements: Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent degree in biochemistry, molecular biology or a related discipline, 2 or more years of relevant postdoctoral experience, publications in peer reviewed journals in the past two years.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals with demonstrated ability to secure and maintain extramural-grant support, and whose research activities complement those of the Department and the School of Medicine. Preference will also be given to individuals with documented experience teaching undergraduate, graduate, and/or medical biochemistry.

Environment: The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is an actively growing department. The Department is located on the UNM Health Sciences Campus, which includes the School of Medicine, College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, and Public Health Programs. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center is the state's principal biomedical research center and has experienced remarkable growth in research infrastructure, faculty, and extramural funding over the past decade. New research and education buildings have been or are soon to be completed. Shared core facilities are extensive and include those for proteomics/mass spectrometry, microscopy, genomics/DNA microarray analysis, and NIH Roadmap participant in Molecular Screening Technologies. Institutional funds are available to enhance existing research strengths and to promote emerging technologies. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology has a well established reputation for innovation and excellence in teaching and uniquely maintains a nationally recognized undergraduate biochemistry major.
Albuquerque is a rapidly growing city (current population is approximately 700,000) with diverse cultural amenities, an affordable cost of living, a temperate climate, and beautiful natural surroundings. New Mexico is the fifth largest state in the United States with 121,335 square miles. The opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation are as varied as the state's terrain. Our geography includes colorful mesas, extinct volcanoes, unusual rock formations and mountain peaks stretching to 13,000 feet covered in dense aspen and coniferous forests. These altitudes, coupled with New Mexico's light, fluffy snow and brilliant sunshine, create some of the finest ski and snowboarding conditions in the West. New Mexico also has approximately 20 million acres of forested land of which 8.5 million is designated as National Forest for the weekend sightseer or avid backcountry explorer. Ancient seas that once covered the land left behind fossil beds to explore throughout the state and few states can boast having six of the earth's seven climatic zones within its borders.

Application Process: For best consideration, application materials must be received by October 1, 2008. The position will remain open until filled. Applicants need to submit a curriculum vitae, statement of research focus, statement of teaching philosophy and interests, and three representative publications. Applicants must also provide names and contact information of three individuals who can provide a comprehensive evaluation of their accomplishments and future potential for research and teaching. Applications should be sent to: Chair, Faculty Search Committee, c/o Ms. Sheryl Cohn, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of New Mexico School of Medicine, MSC08-4670, 1 University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM 87131. This position may be subject to criminal records screening in accordance with New Mexico law.

The University of New Mexico is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and Educator
