Tuition/Scholarship

Award Characteristics & Limitations

All BA/MD students are required to apply for any and all scholarships for which they are qualified. The BA/MD Undergraduate Scholarship, which all BA/MD students are eligible to receive, meets basic educational costs that are not covered by other scholarships. The amount of BA/MD scholarship awarded varies from student to student. Student loans and workstudy awards are included in the award package and BA/MD scholarship will be adjusted accordingly.  Awards are totaled for the academic year and cannot exceed UNM’s “cost of attendance.”  UNM's "cost of attendance" includes basic educational costs (below) plus personal and transportation costs.

The BA/MD Program considers basic educational costs to include tuition, student fees, housing, meals, and books. Housing cost is based on Redondo apartment rates; meal plan is based on an average cost of available plans; book allowance is set at $460 per semester. Course fees over $210 per semester will be the student's responsibility. Any choices made by a student that produce extra cost, will be the student’s responsibility.

Approximate calculation of basic educational costs per semester is:

Tuition and Fees $2551
Social Fee 00020
Course Fees 00105
Books 00460
Housing 03092
Meal Plan 01211
Total $7439

FAQ’s about scholarship:

How is my BA/MD award decided?
After adding up all the basic educational costs, a target amount is established. Each BA/MD award package is customized for each individual student’s need. Since BA/MD is a need-only supplemental scholarship, it differs for each student.

What is the difference between “basic educational cost” and “cost of attendance?”
“Basic educational cost” is the formula that BA/MD uses to determine awards. It includes tuition and student fees, housing, an average amount for course fees and books, and an average meal plan. It does not allow for any personal or travel expenses.

“Cost of Attendance” is a maximum cap of support that UNM allows based on federal guidelines of expenses to enroll in school and live as a college student. This does include estimates for personal and travel expenses, and is more than “basic educational costs”.

Does the BA/MD scholarship cover medical school?
No - only the undergraduate program.
