Otolaryngology Residency

The residency program consists of a four-year program of progressive otolaryngology training with one or more years of prior general surgery experience. All areas of the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the head and neck are covered. One resident is chosen each year at the second-year house officer level. One position is filled each year for a total of four residents in the program.

Residents are encouraged to engage in some research, either with projects of their own or with ongoing staff projects. Residents are encouraged and expected to participate in teaching medical students rotating on the service and in teaching residents from other specialties.

Throughout the four years, residents also attend continuing clinics where they follow, on a long-term basis, chronic illness as well as pre- and post-surgery patients.

The otolaryngology program uses the resources of University Hospital, including Children's Hospital of New Mexico, VAMC and Lovelace Medical Center as well as two private practice surgery services that afford specific exposure to otology/neurotology, including cochlear implantation and cosmetic facial plastic surgery.

First- and second-year residents are assigned to UH and VAMC for six-month rotations in general and pediatric otolaryngology with a gradual progression of responsibilities.

The third-year resident is considered a senior resident and spends the entire year at the Lovelace Medical Center.

As chief resident, the fourth-year resident is assigned supervisory responsibility for both UH and the VAMC.

The training program is designed to prepare the resident equally for private practice or academic medicine.
