Apply to the MD/PhD Program
Eligibility
The UNM
School of Medicine Admissions Policy also applies to the MD/PhD program.
Briefly, an important non-performance factor in considering students
for admission to The University of New Mexico School of Medicine is the
residency status of the student.
As a state-supported institution in a state where health care needs
are great, the medical school feels strongly that most of the accepted
applicants should be residents of
New Mexico.
The school acknowledges a secondary obligation to students in western
states without medical school through participation in the Western
Interstate Commission of Higher Education (WICHE*)
program and will continue to accept a few of these students each year.
The school accepts a few out-of-state residents with exceptional
qualifications. Foreign
nationals with U.S.
permanent resident visas who otherwise meet the requirements for admission
are also considered. Students must
meet the minimum requirements for
admission into the UNM School of
Medicine. Applicants to the MD/PhD program can request that their
applications be also considered for the MD program.
Students currently in the first, second or third years of
Medical
School at UNM may also
apply.
*The
University
of New Mexico is also a
member of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education
(WICHE). Therefore, consideration is
given to residents of participating states that at present have no medical
schools (Montana and Wyoming).

How to Apply
New Students
- Applicants need to begin with submission of the
AMCAS application (the
deadline is November 15 of each year). It must specify that the application is for the
combined MD/PhD degree program. When an AMCAS application is received by
the UNM Office of Admissions, it is evaluated, and the information,
forms, and instructions necessary for completion of UNM's supplementary
application are made available to the student. When the application file
is complete, it will be reviewed by members of the MD/PhD Admissions
Committee.
- Applicants also need to complete the
statement of
purpose form and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be
submitted on their behalf on this form. The letters need to address past research and clinical
experience, potential for a future scientific career and unique
qualifications of the applicant for the MD/PhD program.
- All statement of purpose forms and letters of recommendation should be sent directly to:
