RANDOM GUIDELINES FOR IMPROVING PROMOTION/TENURE DOSSIERS
The ad hoc committees reviewing the dossiers suggested that we add some guidelines
to the dossier preparation process. In order to improve the communication with the
ad hoc committees, some pieces of information that we would like included in the dossiers.
- FAD reports and UPA information
Include reports from several years rather than only the last year. The committee needs
to have a more complete idea of the pattern of productivity.
- Research
Standard information related to grants should include a copy of the face sheet and the following:
- Name of agency
- Dates of Support
- Amount of money overall by year and faculty support
- Description of the role of the faculty member
- Description of specific articles that were a result of the grant
*Suggestion: include a narrative expanding on the grant information in order for the committee
to better understand the importance of the grant, the work/results, and the role of the faculty member
- Mentoring
This is a necessary component of promotion to full professor. There should be a letter from
each person mentored describing the depth of involvement of the mentor in their career with
examples of how the mentor assisted them.
The faculty members applying for promotion should include a description of 1) their role in
mentoring, 2) numbers of faculty, students, residents, community contacts, 3) names of persons
mentored, 4) frequency of contact, and 5) outcomes.
Descriptions of mentoring will be added to the dossier if they include repetitive
involvement with students, residents, faculty, or community contacts where the faculty member
has taken an active role in providing professional support and/or social support.
- Clinical Productivity
If available, information on national benchmarks should be included. Several years of
comparisons would be best. If benchmarks are not available, a narrative addressing
productivity comparisons should be included.
