Who should attend this workshop?
- All new faculty are assigned to attend this two or three day orientation
- Faculty who are not new hires may attend portions (with approval by Associate Dean
for Academic Affairs) depending on availability of space.
Content
- This orientation involves new faculty in a three day orientation to the School of
Medicine. The orientation is coordinated through the Office of Academic Affairs and
occurs four times per year (July, September, February, and May). The first day includes
exposure to academic affairs (discussions of promotion, annual performance evaluations
and mentoring), the American with Disabilities Act, and a discussion about cultural
competence within the clinical setting. The afternoon is spent learning about the problem-based
learning style of medical education of the UNM School of Medicine.
- Day 2 addresses research, both clinical and basic sciences, as well as animal research.
Breakfast is with the Dean of the School of Medicine and lunch discussion addresses
bioethics. The afternoon is spent honing skills using databases with the faculty of the HSC
Library.
- Day 3 is for clinical faculty only. Breakfast is with the CEO of University Hospital and
is followed by an introduction to Clinical Affairs. The morning is completed by a two hour
training on Powerchart the data system for tracking patient information. Lunch time discussion
centers on law and medicine. The final afternoon addresses UPA, the group practice for the School
of Medicine faculty.
