UNM HSC School of Medicine

Application Process

AMCAS Application
The University of New Mexico uses the centralized American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) that is supported by the Association of American Medical Colleges. Applicants for the medical school will apply through the web using a web application at the following web site: http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/start.htm. The AMCAS applications of those applicants who wish to apply to The University of New Mexico School of Medicine will be electronically forwarded to school.

Supplemental Applications
The Office of Admissions will screen applications received from AMCAS and determine if applicants meet the minimal academic requirements.  In general, only those applicants with a total numerical MCAT score of 22 or greater and an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or greater will be considered for admission and will be invited to complete their supplemental applications and a residency form.  Applicants who do not meet the undergraduate GPA threshold of 3.0 may be considered if they have a GPA of 3.5 or more for at least 6-8 rigorous science courses taken at the post-baccalaureate level.  In addition, applicants with an MCAT OR GPA that does not meet the minimum requirements are still encouraged to apply. Those student may be considered for the Premedical Enrichment Program (PrEP). For additional information regarding the Premedical Enrichment Program please contact Dr. Steven Mitchell at smmitchell@salud.unm.edu or call the Office of Academic Support and Information Services at 925-4441..

WICHE and non resident applicants must apply to the EDP to receive consideration. In addition, WICHE and former New Mexico residents must have at least the average MCAT/GPA threshold of MCAT: 28 GPA: 3.6, to be given consideration for admissions. All other non resident applicants must have strong ties to the state to be given consideration for admissions. The supplemental application is online and can only be accessed by a password issued by the Office of Admissions.  Instructions for completing the supplemental application are found on the Office of Admissions web site

All applicants who are invited to complete their supplemental applications will be invited for interviews at this school.  Applicants completing full application materials must remit a $50 fee upon request.  Fee waivers will be considered when the applicant indicates he or she is disadvantaged on the AMCAS application and writes a brief letter to the Assistant Dean for Admissions describing the reason for the waiver request.

Interviews
Applicants who are residents of the State of New Mexico and who have been sent supplemental applications will have two individual interviews with members of the Committee on Admissions as will selected WICHE and nonresident applicants who meet the minimum requirements for admission. The interviews will help the Committee on Admissions evaluate the applicant’s maturity, motivation for the study of medicine, problem-solving skills, ability to relate to people, and ability to express their ideas in an organized manner. The interviewers may provide suggestions to applicants about how they may improve their applications.

Letters of Recommendation (Evaluation)
Each applicant should solicit letters of recommendation or evaluation from three individuals who know them well. These individuals should be chosen carefully by the applicant to honestly evaluate their abilities and their motivation for medical school. Further suggestions about choosing individuals for writing recommendations are given in the instructions for the supplemental application.

Applicants may use Virtual Evals (www.virtualevals.org/) or Interfolio (www.interfolio.com/) to submit letters of recommendation electronically. Both are secure, web-based systems through which professors and health professions advisors can transmit letters of evaluation to medical schools.
