Phase III of the curriculum lasts approximately 13 months and features more hospital-based clinical experiences in which the students will have progressive responsibility for patient care under house staff and faculty supervision. Phase III gives students the opportunity to finalize their career choice, optimize their residency application, and to broaden their educational opportunities.
During this time, students will be required to spend one month in a community perceptorship to fulfill the New Mexico Preceptorship requirement. This experience involves a working relationship with a practicing physician who has chosen primary care as his/her life’s work, and who can serve as a role model. Students are also provided the opportunity to learn about the organization and economics of health care in a variety of settings such as community clinics, solo or group private practice, or HMO.
Students are also required to complete a four week Ambulatory Care rotation. The Ambulatory Care Phase III rotation is designed to provide students with an advanced ambulatory rotation focused on the UNM Core Competencies of medical knowledge, patient care, communication skills, ethics and professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based care. Students will have advanced learning opportunities in Public Health through seminars, problem sets and projects, and public health clinical sites.
