Office of Student Admissions

Transfer Applicants

Transfer applications to the University of New Mexico School of Medicine will be considered on a case-by-case basis for those that meet the following criteria:

  • Must be classified as a State of New Mexico resident.
  • Must demonstrate a compelling need to transfer.
  • Must have taken and passed the U. S. Medical Licensure Exam (USMLE) Step 1 with a score of 200 or better.
  • Must have taken the MCAT and received a composite score of 22 or better.
  • Must have a reasonable undergraduate GPA, taking into account the MCAT and USMLE scores.
  • Must have finished all pre-clinical education, normally the first 1 ½ to 2 years of medical school curriculum.
  • Must be a current medical student in good academic standing at one of the following:
    • U. S. medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA)
    • A foreign medical school approved by the World Health Organization (WHO)

Students who meet the above criteria may then submit an Advanced Standing Application Request Form to the UNM School of Medicine Office of Admissions. Further details on the application process and requirements will be sent to the student once the Office of Admissions has approved the transfer application request.

Vacancies in Phase II and Phase III of the medical school curriculum must be available in order to accommodate the transfer student for the duration of his/her undergraduate medical education. Students interested in transferring must be willing to complete all of the requirements of the UNM SOM curriculum, and may be required to extend their education beyond the normal four years to complete these requirements. The exact point in the curriculum where the successful transfer applicant is permitted to join will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
