Through Student Learning Support (SLS) the UNM School of Medicine provides assistance to students to enhance their learning skills.

Consultation is available regarding:

  • Study habits
  • Learning skills
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Test anxiety
  • Time management
  • Problem-solving conceptualization
  • Myers-Briggs Type Indicator administration and interpretation
  • Related areas of concern

After initial consultation students may be directed towards available UNM or community resources, begin working on skills through SLS, or be referred to special courses (Board Review) or diagnostics as needed.

SLS services are available to:

  • Medical students
  • Physician Assistant students
  • Interns
  • Residents

Referrals to SLS services are welcome from:

  • Students and residents
  • Block chairs
  • Academic advisors
  • Education deans (UME, Student Affairs, GME)
  • Clerkship directors
  • Clerkship coordinators

What to bring to the first visit with SLS:

  • Sample copies of notes taken during class.
  • Examples of completed formative tests
  • MCAT, CBSE, CCSE, and USMLE results, or inservice training exam scores.
  • Any other examples or documentation to help explain the area of concern.

Disability accommodations are also coordinated through SLS.

Those students with newly or previously diagnosed disabilities who need accommodations for learning and/or testing maintain current documentation in the office of SLS. This office guides students through the process of acquiring services and suggesting relevant accommodation formats.

An HSC advisory committee evaluates the necessity for, and appropriateness of accommodation requests to assist students in meeting the technical standards necessary for earning the Doctor of Medicine degree.

 

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if I have a learning disability or think I might have one?
If you have been diagnosed with a learning disability or think you might have one, make an appointment with Cheri Koinis, M.Ed, manager of Student Learning Support at 272-8028. Together you will decide on the best route to take.

Possibilities include recommendations for:

  • further diagnostic testing
  • counseling
  • accommodations to maximize learning and test taking

I study very hard but I do not seem to be learning as much as I need to know. What can I do?
 Contact the SLS office and schedule an appointment . Bring copies of the materials you use for study as listed in the earlier section. Perhaps there are more effective learning techniques you can adopt .

How soon can I be seen?
Generally, appointments are available within 1 week of request on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays.
