Frequently Asked Questions

I study very hard but my test scores do not seem to reflect what I really know. What can I do?

Contact the Academic Success Center (ASC) and schedule an appointment. Collect copies of your study materials and bring them with you to your first appointment. You will have an interview and the materials will be used to help evaluate your approach to learning. Recommendations will be based on the results of the evaluation.

What should I do if I am having a ‘life crisis,’ for example, the sudden death of my father today, and I have a final exam tomorrow?

Immediately inform the block chair and the Dean of Student Services, via phone and email. Check the UNM SOM Student Handbook relevant to your class and review the options for taking a leave of absence.

When should I take an ‘Incomplete’ or a ‘Leave of Absence’ (LOA)?

Incompletes are given by faculty only in the event of extenuating circumstances beyond the student’s control (www.hsc.unm.edu.som, student handbook). It is best to discuss the situation with the block chair, dean of student services, dean of undergraduate medical education, or ASC.

If I take a LOA what happens to my financial aid?

If you take a LOA your financial aid will stop. It is best to discuss the impact of starting and stopping a LOA with the UNM SOM financial aid officer before requesting a leave of absence. There are community resources that may be recommended at this time.

What if I know I’m not ready to take Step 1 and the deadline is fast approaching?

Discuss this with the Dean of Student Services, Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, or ASC. If you have evidence that you will not pass by the required date, DO NOT TAKE THE TEST. Rather, request a LOA and take the time you need to study so you are as prepared as possible when you take Step 1. Your progress will be delayed and graduation may be delayed, however, once you receive your passing score for Step 1 you will be ready to begin Phase II, as scheduling allows.

What if I have a disability (learning, physical, psychiatric) or think I might have one?

If you have been diagnosed with a disability, or think you might have one, make an appointment with Cheri Koinis at 272-8028 or email ckoinis@salud.unm.edu. Together you will decide on the best route to take.
