BIOC 423 Introductory Biochemistry Introductory biochemistry is a course in which students will study the molecules and metabolic reactions occurring within the living cell. The emphasis in this survey course is on a chemical understanding of the mechanisms by which cell integrate and control intermediary metabolism. Also included in the course of study are quantitative problems in pH control, enzyme kinetics, genomics and bioenergetics. For many students this is a first, and sometimes only, upper division science course. As an upper division course, BIOC 423 integrates materials you have studied on your previous general chemistry, organic chemistry and biology courses within the context of human physiology. BIOC 423 is a 3 credit course that is offered fall and spring semesters. Prerequisites: Organic chemistry (302 or 308). Students who have not successfully completed a one year course in organic chemistry may not register for this course. Credits earned in this course cannot be used to fulfill the requirements for a biochemistry major. Consequently, biochemistry majors should not register for this course. Biochemistry Sections: Two different sections of BIOC 423 are offered during the Fall semester. Section 001 Section 1 is a traditional lecture based biochemistry class.Section 002 Section 2 of the course makes extensively use of small group, problem-based learning tutorials to deliver instruction. Students registering for section 002 should be comfortable using web-based communication, self-motivated, and will also require approval from the BA/MD advisor or the course instructor to register for this course.
