Description of research

Because of my background in analytical chemistry and nutrition, my research has focused on nutritional assessment in the context of disease, particularly in the developing world.
Recent work has centered on the nutritional status and body composition of children and adolescents with sickle cell disease (SCD). My recent grant submission to NIH proposes to examine the feasibility of using impedance analysis to monitor the effect of fatty acid supplementation in children with this disease. In addition, I have used both biochemical and physical measurements (such as calcaneal ultrasound) to determine the bone status in SCD and plan to examine the role of specific growth factors in the bone turnover in children with this disease.

The second area of interest is in the bone status of women residing in areas where the dietary intake of calcium is very low over a lifetime. In addition to establishing reference values for calcaneal ultrasound in a Nigerian population, I am also examining the effects that pregnancy and lactation have on the bone turnover in women with chronic low calcium intake. In relation to this, we are studying the effects of Norplant, a progesterone-only contraceptive, on the bone status of women using this form of implantable contraceptive.

A third area of interest is in the factors that contribute to anemia in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria in particular. The incidence of neural tube defects in northern Nigeria is one of the highest in the world. Because girls in this region of the world often marry after secondary school, we examined the folate and B12 status of girls attending government boarding schools. We determined that both their folate and vitamin B12 status was marginal to deficient. As a result of this study the local UNICEF program is incorporating folate supplementation into their vaccination programs and examining ways to increase locally available foods containing folate and vitamin B12 into the school menus. As an extension of this work, I am also interested in analyzing the locally available foods for their nutritional content since many of these foods are not contained in food data bases.

A new study is being implemented to determine the feasibility of using impedance analysis (phase angle, in particular) as a marker of the development of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia is a major contributor to maternal death in northern Nigeria where 25 to 30 per cent of women die during pregnancy and childbirth.
