RESEARCH INTERESTS

My research interests fall into one of two broad areas: 1) the structure, function and genetics of mammalian glycohydrolases, beta-glucosidase in particular; and 2)maternal/child health problems in sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria and the Republic of Niger in particular. As for the enzymology projects, my short-term goals are to: 1) determine the function of non-lysosomal beta-glucosidases (i.e., identify natural substrates); 2) sequence the human genes that encode these enzymes; and 3) assess the diagnostic utility of serum beta-glucosidase determinations as markers of ischemic bowel disease. The Africa studies embrace a large number of diseases, including: 1) skeletal health and metabolism of women; 2) goiter and essential fatty acid metabolism: 3) assessment of the nutritional quality of breast milk; 4) protein-calorie malnutrition (kwashiorkor and marasmus); and 5) sickle cell anemia. In addition, we are committed to a comprehensive analysis of the nutritional and chemical composition of 100 of the most common famine foods of the western Sahel.
