The Department of Cell Biology and Physiology is a basic science department within the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. The department was established in 1997 to provide an integration of the more reductionistic sciences of biochemistry, molecular and cell biology with the more systems-based sciences of physiology and developmental biology. The members of the departmental faculty come from a wide variety of academic backgrounds that include clinical anatomy; biochemistry; biophysics; molecular, cellular and developmental biology; and physiology. The formal divisions within the department are the following:
The department consists of 14 faculty members, and it is expected that two more will be added within the next two years. Another dozen investigators from other basic science and clinical departments at the University of New Mexico, at the nearby Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, and at the Los Alamos National Laboratory hold adjunct or secondary appointments in the department. About two dozen students and postdoctoral fellows are currently carrying out their training within the department.
