Center for Disaster Medicine

About Us

The University of New Mexico Center for Disaster Medicine established in 1989 by UNM Vice-President Dr. Paul Roth. The organization has grown exponentially and now serves the University, the State of New Mexico, and the nation with a three-part mission of service, education, and research.

The University of New Mexico Center for Disaster Medicine is part of the Pre-Hospital and Disaster Medicine Division of the UNM Department of Emergency Medicine. We are located in an off-campus facility, near the Albuquerque airport. Our facility includes conference and office space for our faculty and staff, 2,000 square feet of medical equipment storage, and a training room with full audiovisual capability including Telehealth video conferencing services.

The real strength of CDM is our people. Headed by Dr. Michael Richards, an emergency physician and assistant professor in the UNM School of Medicine, our staff includes professionals in the fields of emergency medicine, emergency nursing, community planning, emergency preparedness law, veterinary medicine, disaster medicine, and public health.
