A MRC unit is a community-based, organized group of volunteers who can serve during a local emergency health situation and assist with local public health needs. Major local emergencies can overwhelm the capability of first responders, especially during the first 12 to 72 hours. An organized, well-trained MRC unit can assist their local medical community during these times of crisis. The local MRC unit can also be a valuable asset for helping address public health concerns in a community throughout the year.

The University of New Mexico Center for Disaster Medicine  established a community - based, citizen volunteer Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) Unit. The MRC volunteers supports and works in conjunction with US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Surgeon General, and through the New Mexico Department of Health Bioterrorism Hospital Preparedness Program and Emergency Management Office.
