Center for Disaster Medicine

National Disaster Life Support Courses

CDM has recently been named the regional training center for the National Disaster Life Support Foundation. The National Disaster Life Support Foundation is a national leader in emergency management research and development, and its courses are approved by the Center for Domestic Preparedness and Emergency Response at the American Medical Association (AMA).

National Disaster Life Support Training

Upcoming National Disaster Life Support Courses Scheduled in New Mexico:

Basic Disaster Life Support (1 day) BDLS
Friday April 11, 2008
Phoenix Fire Department Training Academy
2430 S 22nd Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009

Cost: $50 (AZ and NM residents) and $200 (Out-of-state residents)
BDLS® curriculum is developed with an all-hazards approach (recognition and management) to disaster response. Individual chapters within the didactic curriculum are incorporating a unifying algorithm called the "D-I-S-A-S-T-E-R paradigm". Also, the concepts of MASS Triage and Disaster Casualty Zones are reinforced continually throughout the chapters. Participants can receive certification for completion of this didactic portion of the course. Those successfully completing the BDLS® didactic course can then participate in ADLS®.

Advanced Disaster Life Support (2 days) ADLS
Saturday April 12th & Sunday April 13th, 2008
PhoenixFire Department Training Academy
2430 S 22nd Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85009

Cost: $100 (AZ and NM residents) and $400 (Out-of-state residents)
The ADLS® portion of the training program is focused at the provider who has already taken the BDLS® program. The ADLS® training consists of an intensive two-day course, focused on the development of ''hands on" skills and allows the provider to apply the knowledge learned in BDLS® using simulated disasters. Environment: The BDLS® course will be taught in a classroom setting. The ADLS®course includes classroom sessions and simulations requiring moderately rigorous physical activity.
Both courses are accredited for CE credits for physicians, nurses, and EMS professionals.

In 2003, the American Medical Association (AMA), in partnership with four major medical centers and three national health organizations, established the National Disaster Life Support (NDLS) training program to better prepare health care professionals and emergency response personnel for mass casualty events. The overarching goal is to standardize emergency response training nationwide and strengthen our nation's public health system.

The NDLS courses stress a comprehensive all-hazards approach to help physicians and other health professionals deal with catastrophic emergencies from terrorist acts as well as from explosions, fires, natural disasters (such as hurricanes and floods), and infectious diseases, which are much more likely to occur.

About BDLS/ADLS: Critical to healthcare preparedness is the need for a uniform, coordinated approach to mass casualty management. This is best accomplished through a standardized course that provides peer reviewed, validated didactic and practical training for the responders to mass casualty management. Basic Disaster Life Support and Advanced Disaster Life Support have been designed to meet this critical healthcare preparedness need and are designed for a wide range of professionals involved in disaster response.

These programs are designed to promote awareness and hands-on practical skills in dealing with disaster management and preparedness. The BDLS training consisted of didactic lecture on topics including natural disaster, traumatic and explosive events, nuclear and radiological events, and critical incident stress.

These nationally recognized programs have now been adopted by the American Medical Association. The National Disaster Life Support Foundation is a not-for-profit foundation that has been established to oversee and administer the program. CDM Faculty serve as editors and contributors for the NDLS programs.

Basic Disaster Life Support (BDLS)

BDLS is the didactic component of the national disaster life support training. The BDLS curriculum is developed with an all-hazards approach (recognition and management) to disaster response. By teaching multiple disciplines simultaneously, a commonality of approach and language will develop, improving the care and coordination of response in a weapon of mass destruction (WMD) disaster and public health emergencies. Those completing the BDLS didactic course can then participate in ADLS.
