It is founded on sound physiological principles and focuses much more heavily on physical benefits rather than spiritual ones. This approach is optimal for beginner or experienced beginner level students who may or may not be physically active.

Cost: $12 ($10 for UH and UNM employees)

Nia, previously known as Non-Impact Aerobics, or Neuromuscular Integrative Action, blends three dance arts (Isadora Duncan, modern dance, and jazz dance), three martial arts (aikido, tae kwon do and tai chi), and three healing arts (Alexander Technique, yoga, and Feldenkrais). Nia is a form of aerobic exercise that can be practiced by people of all ages and physical conditions. It is adaptable to every level of fitness, every age and type of body, even those with special limitations. The guiding idea behind Nia is to do what feels good and right, and to stop if something hurts or does not feel right. Classes are choreographed, using a wide variety of musical styles. No special equipment is needed. The teacher leads the students through a series basic movements, which can be performed at different levels of intensity. There are a variety of movement combinations, both working with and against gravity. There is no repetitive jogging or jumping. The aim is to blend the movements with the conscious use of mind and energy. Doing Nia helps with maintaining a healthy life-style. It can be an important part of an individual's weight loss/maintenance program. It can improve endurance, strengthen muscles, and increase flexibility. It also can help relieve stress and worry. Nia can increase your fitness, health, and well-being!
