Mindfulness Programs

MINDFULNESS-BASED STRESS REDUCTION (MBSR)

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction is an 8-week course, offered several times a year, designed to teach people how to recognize stress and reduce it, using daily meditation and yoga.  MBSR has been used by tens of thousands of people around the world for coping with chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and other medical conditions. No previous experience is necessary, but a significant commitment of time and attention is needed to achieve the most benefit. All are welcome to participate, especially patients and staff of UNM/UH.  You do not need a referral. Course instructor is Andrea Bliss MA PA-C. She practices mindfulness, has been formally trained in teaching MBSR, and has led many MBSR classes at UNM.

MINDFUL EATING AND LIVING (MEAL)

Mindful Eating and Living (MEAL) is useful for gaining a new perspective on eating, for short-term weight loss, and for improving other aspects of mood and life.  It is a 6-week course, followed by monthly sessions.  The program--developed at UNM--uses brief guided meditations in class and at home.  Participants receive written materials and audio CDs for home practice, and each class includes a mindful eating exercise.  In order to achieve the greatest benefit, we ask people to commit to a year of mindful eating practice (as suggested by MEAL graduates).

The next MEAL class will begin Tuesday, July 8, 2008.  This course will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5:30 - 7:30 PM.  The cost is $250, and payment can be made by credit card (preferred), cash or check. Fee covers administration, as well as supplies (food, CDs, books). Scholarships are available--complete information about scholarships will be given at the orientation. Instructor: Nancy Oestreicher MS (professionally-trained in teaching MBSR and MEAL).

Registration: click on this MEAL Information Request Form, or call 925-4573 to leave your name and phone number, and we will contact you. When we contact you, we will ask some questions and provide more information about the class, including the location (near Montgomery and Jefferson). Enrollment is limited to people with obesity, which means a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more. If you are unsure about your BMI, please go to this website and use the adult BMI calculator: http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/bmi/index.htm.

Notice for graduates of the MEAL program: the monthly sessions in 2008 will be on the last Friday of each month, at 4:30 pm at CFL.  They are led by Nancy Oestreicher MS.   For more info, call 925-4573.
