All patients seen by the MDs and DOMs need to be referred by a primary care provider or specialist directly involved in your care, even if your insurance does not require this. This is done to ensure good communication between all providers.
Other services-such as massage, hypno-therapy, and educational classes (like MBSR and yoga) do not require a referral and are "paid-up-front" (that is, paid for with cash, check, or credit card at the time of the appointment).
For UNM Providers, use the ad hoc form in PowerChart Office after October 1, 2007. Our clinic will process the referral and call the patient.

Coverage varies by insurance carrier, type, and services. Not all services are covered by insurance or Medicare. All patients with Medicare, Medicaid and UNM Care/SCI can be seen by the Integrative physicians under their plans.
UNM Care covers acupuncture for only two reasons: 1. chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, and 2. post-operative dental pain. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover acupuncture for any reason.
A few commercial plans cover massage therapy. At CFL, massage therapy is a paid-up-front service, and then you can submit a claim to your carrier.
