Program Objectives
The University of New Mexico School of Medicine Minisabbatical Program
is coordinated through the Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) in
cooperation with departments in the School of Medicine. This
learner-directed approach to postgraduate medical education provides diverse
opportunities by which physicians in practice are able to:
Description
In the minisabbatical program, practicing physicians return to the academic
setting to pursue their own learning objectives. The course coordinates a
physician's learning objectives and time commitments with the availability
and expertise of the School of Medicine department(s) involved.
Educational experiences might include observation or participation in:
The physician's current medical practice, previous medical experience,
formal postgraduate educational training, and area of medical interest are
considerations in planning the minisabbatical.
Each participants received guidance in developing the education program
schedule most appropriate for his or her specific requirements. Utilizing
this flexible design, a program may be planned for a few days, one or two
weeks, or possibly a more extended period of time.
Requirements
The minisabbatical program is primarily designed for physicians who are
actively involved in full time clinical practice of medicine in New Mexico.
Applicants must meet the requirements for obtaining training authorization
at the University of New Mexico Hospital. In general, physicians holding a
valid New Mexico license to practice medicine and malpractice insurance meet
these requirements. (Without a New Mexico license training will be arranged
on an observation only basis.)

Before completing the application process, please call the Office of
Continuing Medical Education and speak with the coordinator of the
minisabbatical program. They will be happy to discuss your interests,
learning objectives and time commitment and then act as a liaison with the
appropriate School of Medicine department(s) in order to arrange a
satisfactory schedule of learning experiences.
Minisabbatical experiences range from participation in rounds to bedside
evaluations of patients as well as case presentations and the opportunity to
discuss with faculty the most appropriate management in patient care.
Tuition
Tuition for participation in this program is $200.00 per day. Tuition is
payable on the first day of the minisabbatical training period. We ask that
you NOT mail your tuition with your application.
Accreditation
The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Office of Continuing
Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing
Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians.
The UNM Office of Continuing Medical Education takes responsibility for the
content, quality and scientific integrity of this CME activity.
The Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this continuing
medical education activity for one for one credit hours in Category 1 of the
Physician's Recognition Award of the American Medical Association.

Participant Response
Physicians who have taken advantage of the minisabbatical program have been
positive about their experiences at the University of New Mexico School of
Medicine. Prospective applicants who would like to discuss the program
experiences with these alumni can obtain names through the Office of
Continuing Medical Education. Faculty members of the School of Medicine have
