Continuing Medical Education
Mission Statement
The University of New Mexico School of Medicine strives to improve
human health through education, research and patient care. The University of
New Mexico provides continuing medical education (CME) to practicing
physicians and interprofessional teams to promote lifelong learning that
will enhance professional competence and performance and improve patient
outcomes.
Purpose
1. To improve the knowledge, skills and attitudes of physicians and
healthcare teams with information that is topical and relevant to their areas of
practice;
2. To foster desirable physician attributes such as the ACGME, ABMS, and IOM
core competencies;
3. To encourage interdisciplinary education that promotes collaborative
practice;
4. To encourage understanding of the ethical issues affecting the practice of
medicine;
5. To support improvement in practice through the activities that link
continuing medical education to quality improvement, patient safety, and
improved patient care.
Content Area
Content of CME activities addresses the needs of practicing physicians and
interprofessional teams. CME includes all areas of biomedical knowledge,
clinical skills and patient care, interpersonal and communication skills, ethics
and professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based
practice. Prevention, behavioral health, and the disease areas identified as
high priorities by the New Mexico Department of Health, patient safety and
quality improvement, and the special needs of New Mexico’s diverse ethnic and
socioeconomic populations are a priority of the Office of CME.
Target Audience
UNM CME activities may reach a national audience. CME activities are primarily
directed to New Mexico physicians and interprofessional teams. A top priority of
the UNM CME program is reaching New Mexico physicians and interprofessional
teams practicing in rural, underserved areas of the state.
Type of Activities
Diverse types of activities are offered to meet the needs of physicians with
diverse learning styles, including (but not limited to): Symposia and
conferences, regularly scheduled series (RSS) such as grand rounds and
case-conferences, Minisabbaticals, enduring materials, web-based CME, and other
media as appropriate. Joint sponsorship with New Mexico-based nonprofit
organizations and with specialty societies with UNM faculty leadership is a
priority of the Office of CME.
Results
The ultimate goal of the CME program of the University of New Mexico is to helps
physicians gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide safe,
high quality health care to their patients. The CME program will evaluate
outcomes changes in physician and team member competence as demonstrated by
physician and team member learning and improved physician and team member skills
measured by enhanced self-efficacy, and/or performance improvement as
demonstrated by physicians’ and team members’ intention to change,
identification of barriers to change, and actual practice change and/or improved
patient outcomes measured at the population level.
