I never imagined how rewarding an experience this would be the moment I became part of the BA/MD Program. The memories that I have, and the level of knowledge that I have achieved is more than I could put in words. I studied and worked hard every week like all student. But the BA/MD Program not only provided me with the opportunity to achieve my dream of becoming a future physician, it also provided me with a family. The bonds that we have formed as part of the program are unique and everlasting. We all share a common goal, and there is nothing more motivating than having wonderful friends at your shoulder helping you when times are hard. Their patience and understanding humbled me. We shared memorable moments, and the simple idea that we were all going to medical school together provided those fundamental values in order to stay on track. Our counselors and the BA/MD staff were part of our support group as well. When I first heard of the program, I imagined "BOOT-CAMP." Instead, I found a heaven. I had friends, a super awesome support staff, endless resources to help me on exams, and a place I could call home. Well...my second home :) Fernando Ascencio (2008 Cohort)
When I first began the program I did not grasp the amazing amount of help the program would offer me throughout the year. Our advisors, Karen and Bryn are like family to us and are always willing to help any of their BA/MD students through any sort of problem, be it help getting into a class or boy troubles. All of my friends outside of the program say that advisement is a nightmare and they do not have any sort of relationship with their advisors, which makes me even more grateful that we have Karen and Bryn. As part of the inaugural BA/MD class of 2006 and having just graduated, I cannot describe the program more completely than saying that it is truly a blessing. To have a dream to become a doctor and then to be admitted to the program where your dreams are sure to come true with hard work and determination, it really can’t get any better than that. Your fellow classmates become your second family, the people that you soon hold dear to your heart. As I near the start of medical school, I recall the many times that former and current medical students have told me that you will not meet your best friends in high school or even in college, but rather in medical school. Students in the BA/MD program get the pleasure of both meeting these people in college and then continuing on to medical school with these same people right by their side. I look back on these past four years and can’t imagine experiencing college any other way. My experience is indescribable in that it could not have been any better. In terms of the dreams I have for my future, the BA/MD program has more than fulfilled them and I am so thankful for having the opportunity to be apart of such a great program. As students begin their journey as freshman, initially it is difficult to realize that your life is forever changed. Students are given a ticket to fulfill their dream of becoming a doctor while making lifelong friends and unforgettable memories.
