2007 Physician Alumni Reunion
UNM School of Medicine alumni from the classes of 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987 and 1997 gathered in Albuquerque
for their class reunions Sept. 28 and 29.
The class of 1972 gathered at the home of Matthew Walsh, MD, for their class party on September 28.
The class of 1987 gathered at the home of Mary McKee, MD. The classes of 1977, 1982, and 1997 gathered
at the Artichoke Café, located near downtown Albuquerque. Ernie Villescas, MD, ’77; Lydia Roybal-Aragon, MD, ’77;
Albert Martinez, MD, ’82; Barbara McGuire, MD, ’82; and Francine Olmstead, MD, ’97 were the hosts of that party.
All the reunion classes gathered in the new Domenici Center for Health Sciences Education on Saturday,
Sept. 29 for continuing medical education. Robert Katz, MD, the Health Sciences Center’s vice president of
Clinical Affairs, presented a talk titled “The Journey to Excellence,” in which he detailed the quality
initiatives that the University of New Mexico Hospital system is undertaking. These initiatives are part
of a strategy to cultivate an environment where patient safety and quality are central to the work of the
hospital.
Arthur Kaufman, MD, the HSC vice president for Community Health, introduced the redesign of the community
health program at UNM in his talk: “From UNM Care to HEROs: Can we achieve the greatest improvement in health
status of any state by 2020?” His presentation included compelling data about how focusing on the issues of
health care funding, access, and systems can have a significant impact on community health.
The afternoon was rounded out with an hour-long tour of the UNMH Barbara and Bill Richardson Pavilion
given by Clay Gatewood, project manager for the pavilion construction. Gatewood, armed with the blueprints
and other technical specifications for the building, took alumni on an insiders tour of the recently
completed facility.
The weekend culminated in a dinner for all reunion classes at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Albuquerque.
The planning process for the 2008 alumni reunions will be under way soon. If you are a member of the
class of 1968, 1973, 1978, 1983, 1988 or 1998 and would like to help plan or host your reunion, please
