2008 Physician Alumni Reunion
The first UNM SOM graduating MD class 1968 held a kickoff party at the home of Dr. Bruce and Marylyn
Lovett on Thursday the 31 of July 2008. All surviving alumni from the class of 1968 were able to attend
and tributes for the three dearly departed classmates were acknowledged. Lots of laughs, lots of food
and trips down memory lane were the topics of the evening.
Alumni, former faculty, staff and friends of Khatali were invited to the annual White Coat Ceremony.
All of the entering medical students representing the class of 2012 were coated by Dr. Timm Associate
Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education. Family and friends of the medical students made for an excited
crowd.
The BATCAVE, Standardized Patients, and the ER’s Air Transportable Hospital provided demonstrations
for all attendees following the White Coat Ceremony. Oooh, aaaah, seemed to be the phrase of the day.
The event was so popular, for both attendees and the demonstrators, during the 2008 reunion that we have
planned to have it as an annual event.
To casually visit one of the many attractions around Albuquerque is nice, but to have a professional
tour guide is to experience the full effect of those personally involved with the origination of the
establishment, such as the case with the tour of the Albuquerque Balloon Museum. Just prior to the Friday
night dinner, we were treated to one of Albuquerque’s fame, (hot air ballooning), and jewel destinations,
(the balloon museum).
One –two – three-swing, did Tiger Woods go to UNM SOM? These alumni are sure demonstrating his
technique. While some alumni were at the balloon museum, others sat in the clubhouse, (Garduno’s) in
the background and watched as their classmates tee off with drives going as far as 400 feet hitting
the center of the driving range. OK truth be said, I did see a few slices go 40 feet into the fence.
Upon returning to New Mexico there is only one “fix” that is legally allowed, a Chile fix and our
alumni found the two best remedies, red and green at Garduno’s on the green in the north valley. Yes
next year we will bring the fire extinguishers.
300 feet above the valley below, with Mount Taylor in the background in a pueblo 1100 years in the
making, one comment from an alumni stated, “In my 27 years living in New Mexico I had never been to
Acoma Sky City, this place is incredible!” Saturday morning found us visiting New Mexico’s past,
on the bus ride to Acoma Dr. Spidle a renowned NM historian gave a lecture on the medical impact that
formed NM as it is today, a perfect topic to set the mood for what was to come, pure enchantment.
A gathering Saturday night at one of Albuquerque’s newest, The Embassy Suites Hotel, provided
fine dining, and dancing through the night.
In all five $2,000 scholarships were presented buy Khatali president Kristine Bordenave
on behalf of our Physicians Association.
