Health Careers Academy

The Health Careers Academy (HCA) is a six-week non-residential summer program for high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. HCA is designed to help strengthen ACT scores. The program is also designed to provide information on, and exposure to, various professions in the healthcare field. Health Careers Academy will enhance student performance in math, science, and English. Participants will increase their preparation for a premedical or allied health curriculum and strengthen their academic competitiveness.

Health Careers Academy (HCA) is a six-week non-residential summer program for high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The 2009 HCA will take place from June 15, 2009 through July 24, 2009 at the UNM Health Sciences Center in Albuquerque, NM and includes:

  • Orientation Session: Parents are strongly encouraged to attend.
  • Classes in math, science, English, and study skills
  • ACT instruction and practice exams
  • Presentations from UNM Health Sciences Center Professionals
  • Health-related hands-on activities
  • CPR certification
  • Graduation Ceremony
  • ACT registration as needed

All selected students receive a stipend for their participation in Health Careers Academy.

Eligibility

The program is open to current 9th, 10th, and 11th graders who meet the following criteria:

  1. Cumulative GPA of 2.25 on a 4.0 scale
  2. Interest in a health profession
  3. Parental permission
  4. Proof of health insurance or Medicaid.
