The vision of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) is to use
an innovative, evidence
based curriculum to educate students to be excellent future
physicians for New Mexico. The curriculum is organized into organ system
blocks, each of which incorporates biologic, behavioral and
population perspectives. Hands-on training in clinical skills and
laboratory sessions along with a weekly continuity clinic improve
integration of basic sciences and clinical medicine.
The mission of t
he Office of Undergraduate Medical Education (UME)
is to educate students who reflect the diverse population of our
state to be well prepared for graduate medical education. Our mission is
accomplished through evaluating the curriculum, assessing medical students,
providing advice on curricular matters, and preparing
faculty for the administration of the Undergraduate Medical
Education Program of the School of Medicine. UME is comprised of
divisions which provide these specialized services:
UME Central Office
The role of UME’s Central Office is to oversee the entire
undergraduate medical education program including curriculum,
assessment, faculty development, and program evaluation. This
oversight requires working closely with the School of Medicine
faculty, committees and other groups
in developing policies and reviewing course activities. Our
staff coordinate the Phase I curriculum schedule with the course
directors and teaching faculty and produce reports on teaching
activities. Our office provides administrative support for
several curricular elements including the Phase III Ambulatory
Care Rotation, Perspectives in Medicine (PIM), the medical
student research requirement, and several of the Phase I blocks.
We also arrange travel for faculty, staff and students who
represent UME at various conferences and national meetings
throughout the year. Accounting functions for all UME
activities are centered in our office.
Assessment and Learning
Assessment and Learning (formerly ACES) evaluates student learning and assists with
curricular development. Assessment and Learning programs provide student assessment,
grade reporting, test file archives for student review, faculty
development, communication skills development, curriculum and
clinical skills curriculum support, student learning support,
scholarship and research support, consulting, and the Standardized Patient
Program.
